PETER MULVEY
Ten Thousand Mornings (Black Walnut)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Peter Mulvey is an amazing singer and guitarist, with a voice that sounds
gritty and worn and clear and pitch perfect all at once. On this CD, he
basically covers a collection of his favorite songs, including Leo Kottke's
"Running up the Stars," Bob Dylan's "Mama, You Been on my Mind," and Elvis
Costello's "Oliver's Army." Some of these songs, which were originally
performed by full bands, sound a little strange performed on an acoustic
guitar with the barest of accompaniment, but the overall effect of the album
is pretty cool, and made to feel even more intimate by the fact that this
was recorded in a bus station, I think, and you can hear announcements being
called over the loudspeaker in the background.
