RONNIE BOWMAN
Starting Over (Sugar Hill)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Starting Over is an apt title for Ronnie Bowman's third solo album, since
this is the one that truly represents a new start. This is his first
recorded outing since leaving his job as the lead singer for the widely
popular Lonesome River Band, and there have been changes in his personal as
well as professional life that are reflected in the choice of material and
the heartfelt quality of the delivery.
If Bowman is in fact starting over, he's doing so with his best foot
forward. He's in possession of one of the finest male voices in country
music today, and he's got the potential to carve out a niche as the male
counterpoint to Alison Krauss in the red-hot bluegrass crossover market.
That point is driven home by the presence of Union Station members Dan
Tyminski (who, like Bowman, is also a Lonesome River alum), Barry Bales and
Jerry Douglas.
Bowman has gathered up songs from a variety of sources, and every one was a
great pick. This is an album worth listening to over and over, for the
great songs, the terrific supporting performances, but most of all for the
terrific voice and style of Ronnie Bowman.
