SAVALAS BROTHERS
Pimp Knuckle (T-Bone's)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is an odd one, because it sounds like DJ music - especially with the
repetitive dance beat that underlies all the music - but there are tons of
people listed inside as co-collaborating performers, including Pat Phalen,
Mr. Mixx, and Spence Townsend. So I guess it's not really DJ music in the
strict technical sense, and really sounds more like a combo between acid
jazz and house music, if I had to define it. Even though I'm pretty much
burned out on most dance music at this point, I like this disc, because it
tries to do neat things with unexpected sounds, throwing in really cool slap
bass here, spooky piano refrains in another spot, lots of scratching, lots
of nice jazz guitar work, all sorts of crazy percussion, etc., etc.
