THE COMPULSIONS
Laughter From Below (self-released)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

The Compulsions are an unsigned band out of New York City that bring me right back to punk's early days. One of Shakespeare's characters said that comparisons are odious, but I'm going to compare The Compulsions to the Clash and the Ramones, because of the way Carlyle and his rotating line-ups of guests invoke powerful send-ups of churning Keith Richards-style chords and full-tilt rock and roll. "Down on the Tracks" and "Dance Around the Fire" recall the best of the Glimmer Twins, telling powerful stories with three angry chords. Guitarist/songwriter Rob Carlyle's brought together guys that nail the punk ethos and energy of its halcyon days cold. Listening to The Compulsions helped me dream a bit: what would Strummer, Jones, and Company have sounded like had not The Clash imploded? If you've discovered signed bands like Jesse Malin on Artemis or the Damwells on Epic you'll likely appreciate The Compulsions. Until they're picked up by a label, check them out at www.thecompulsionsnyc.com.
