DANI SICILIANO

Wow, this is probably the most girly-sounding record I've truly enjoyed for
a while! Dani Siciliano's got one of these girly songstress voices, like
Carly Simon, kind of, all rich and sweet-sounding and very feminine. I
don't usually like singers like that, but the difference with this album
is that the musical arrangements, and the vocal arrangements themselves,
are just so beautifully done. Siciliano overdubs her voice numerous times
on some songs so that her voice is the true instrumentation, while on other
tracks - like on her stand-out, horn-heavy jazz cover of Nirvana's "Come As
You Are" - her heavy, breathy voice is so sparsely accompanied by anything
that it's hard to concentrate on anything else on the room while she's
singing. It reminds me a lot of Portishead and Bjork as well as the
aforementioned Carly Simon, and definitely worth picking up, even if you
don't like chick singers.
