GLORIOUS
Glorious (Toucan Cove)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Every so often Seattle comes up with a sound. Whether you're talking about
the proto-punk of the Sonics/Wailers era, Jimi's psychedelic blues, the
arena rock grandiosity of Heart and Queensryche or the glory days of grunge,
my sleepy little hometown has arguably had an all out of proportion impact
on the American soundtrack.
Looks like we're about to do it again.
Fronted by Geoff Stanfield, lately of Black Lab, and Amy Stolzenbach, last
seen as the reigning guitar goddess behind Seattle's queen of alt-pop,
Carrie Akre, Glorious has forged a sound that their publicist sums up as
"neo-psychedelic Americana Brit pop." That nearly covers it. You could say
that they're simply, ahem, glorious.
Like that best bands from anywhere, the sound is crafted in service to the
songs, and the songs, principally by Stanfield with some significant assists
by Stolzenbach, are the story here. Moody, hooky, powerful, beautiful
songs. Played with skill and passion.
Looks like my sleepy little hometown will be back on the musical map for
awhile.
