LYTHION
From The Beginning... (Lythionmusic)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Rumor has it that a Lythion performance is dramatically ambitious and
visually stunning, but I've just got to accept that on faith, since they're
planted on the opposite coast so far. Sonically, though, I've got the
evidence in hand, in the form or their debut CD, and I can report that
they're similarly ambitious in their aural efforts, and the effect can well
be described as stunning.
Lythion is, in essence, vocalist Ilyana Kadushin and her
multi-instrumentalist partner in sound James Harrel. Between them they
handle the production and mixing chores as well. On stage they get an
assist from visual designer Aaron Michaelson and there are guest artists
helping on a couple of tracks, but overall From The Beginning... is the
product of the meeting of two minds, and when those minds met, a new world
was created.
Pop music, club music, cabaret music and, of course, some plain, unvarnished
rock music are blended into vehicles for Kadushin's voice which can move
from soaring heights to down in the gutter growls to passionate near
whispers seamlessly, while Harrel just keeps the beats bumping. It's music
that takes place outside the normal limits of genre, outside the range of
most musicians' imaginations.
Get in on it From The Beginning... because it's bound to be a wonderful
trip.
