MAGIK BALLET ENSEMBLE
Hell (Kinky Star Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is a cool album of special effects, ghostly vocals, various unexpected
instrument samples, and voice clips, repeated until they're almost
lecturous, that sound like they come from old horror and science fiction
movies, all set to a groovy, spooky-sounding industrial dance beat. It's
funny, because usually music like this falls into one of two
categories - things to put on the background of a party where it doesn't
distract from hitting on a guy/girl, or something that is absolutely
arresting and demands attention. However, this album falls under both
categories, which makes it hard to decide whether I should keep it
downstairs in my office to listen to at leisure, or upstairs in the living
room, so it can be easily reached in case a party spontaneously springs
into being. Decisions, decisions - my life is hell.
