SPOOKY PIE
Audios (self-released)

Reviewed by Holly Day

I love bands like this. Spooky Pie is out to have fun with their music, with silly, tongue-in-cheek murder ballads and lots of "he hurt me, so I hurt him" storytelling. The joint and multiple male and female vocals on all of these song comes across as bratty, bitchy, and sarcastic as hell, and the lyrics are just awesome. In "I'm So Guilty," the female vocals wail about how their partner treats their constant key-losing "like it's World War Three" - something I can easily identify with, living with a completely anal person myself. Musically, this is sleazy, groovy-sounding garage rock, or sci-fi surf music -- depending on what track you're listening to -- with hard guitar power chords that drag along with the vocals with just the right inflection. Also worth mentioning is that the great and wonderful punk iconoclast Geza X produced this, or at least someone who calls themselves Geza X.
