Pick a Winner (Load Records)
Reviewed by Sherman Wick
Pick a Winner showcases the best in avant/techno-noise music. The
compilation was put together by Providence, Rhode Island stalwart
independent music label Load Records. Each song is paired with a video or
a cartoon directed by an independent filmmaker. Both the music and the
visuals are largely lo-fi-but well done, and spoof children's television
programming.
Highlights abound throughout this consistently stentorian and challenging
recording. Lightning Bolt is at its usual best - loud! The band plays bass
and drums awash in feedback at breakneck speed. Wolf Eyes features another
type of noise: ear-shattering electronics, tapes and programming looped
with distorted screamed vocals. It sounds genuinely frightening, and is
engrossingly succinct and beat-centered like the Stooges or Pussy Galore in
their prime. Plus, there is Barkley's Barnyard Critters and a
computer-generated tune by My Favorite Home Page - both are kind of cheesy - but with a steady propelling beat. If you're looking for music that pushes
the envelope with a sense of humor Pick a Winner is definitely worth a
listen.
