JIMMIE VAUGHAN
Do You Get the Blues? (Artemis Records)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

The blues have been very, very good to former Fabulous Thunderbirds Kim Wilson and Jimmie Vaughan in their respective solo careers. This year, they're both up for GRAMMY awards in the Traditional Blues Album category, and Vaughan's 10th nomination for Do You Get The Blues shows that Jimmie's at the top of his blues game. Jimmie's also up for two W.C. Handy Awards, one for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year for Do You Get The Blues and one for Blues Instrumentalist, Guitar. Do You Get The Blues, though, will last long after those award shows fade into memory. "Dirty Girl" and "Let Me In" are instant classics, but I'll replay the cuts that feature another former Thunderbird, singer Lou Ann Barton. Her vocals really do justice to "Power of Love" and "In The Middle of the Night" with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, otherwise known as Double Trouble, the rhythm section behind Jimmie's late younger brother Stevie Ray. Check out my review of former Thunderbird Kim Wilson in this issue of Cosmik Debris: short of a Fabulous Thunderbirds reunion, we've got two great discs from Thunderbird alumni to celebrate in Cosmik Debris this month!
