THE PASTIES
Platonica (Soapstar)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Because their Soapstar label is their very own, the Pasties can get away with following the boilerplate "all rights reserved" message with permission to reproduce their debut album, Platonica, for your friends. Don't do it. Instead, do anything you can to get your friends to buy their own copy so these guys will be encouraged to put out another album sooner rather than later. Why? Because the Pasties are just as good a pop band as the US has to offer these days, and these days we can use all the good pop bands we can find.

Tight as a size small t-shirt on an XL torso, this disc has 11 songs better than anything you've heard on the radio this week. This is a pop band anchored by a bass player (Mike Davis) who has gigged with jazz giants like Pancho Sanchez and Doc Cheetham. The rest of the band, singer/guitarist Devon Copely, keyboardist/guitarist Eric Casimiro and drummer Mat Deveau, honed their respective crafts in Buffalo, Boston and Dallas before converging in NYC to form the Pasties. Talk about your harmonic convergences!

If you take my word for just one this year, take my word for this one. If you love pop, your feelings about the Pasties will be anything but platonic.
