THE AQUABATS
Vs. The Floating Eye of Death (Time Bomb)
Reviewed by Rusty Pipes
You gotta love a group that dresses up in superhero costumes and plays
jumpin', ska-influenced tunes with titles like "Giant Robot-Birdhead,"
"Monsters Wedding," "Tiny Pants" and "Lotto Fever."
If you've never heard of them before, The Aquabats are what would happen if
The Bonzo Dog Band collided with The Specials. And then skidded into The
Power Rangers. Who knows what their Secret Identities are? Who cares? Turn
it up! Songs like "Lovers of Loving Love" are just begging for airplay,
proving that there's more going on here than just theater. Their leader, MC
Bat Commander, is a musical force to be reckoned with.
There's maybe a bit less horns, a touch more synthesizers and definitely
more complicated arrangements on Floating Eye than on their last outing, The
Fury of the Aquabats. There may also be a movie in here somewhere. Maybe
it's a cartoon. With plenty of frantic energy.
When the smoke clears you'll agree this is one fun record by a uniquely
crazy band. I'm dying to see them in concert.
