BOBBY HUTCHERSON
Un Poco Loco (Koch)

This is a reissue of a 1980 Columbia Records release featuring
vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson leading an group of players from an
interesting range of backgrounds through a straight ahead set.
Hutcherson, of course, brought some impressive avant garde credentials
along, though he had moved increasingly toward the mainstream through
the years. Pianist George Cables has established himself as one of the
top players in the bop realm, and John Abercrombie's guitar was one of
the defining elements in the fusiony ECM sound. The diversity of their
backgrounds, though, didn't prevent these players from finding common
ground on this session, and vibes/piano/guitar proved to be a potent
front line.
That front line was supported by drummer Peter Erskine and bassist Chuch
Domanico through seven tracks that range from the Bud Powell penned
title track to originals by Cables and Hutcherson. No matter the source
or style of the material, though, the playing is first rate from start
to finish. If you like jazz, and especially if you like the vibes, then
you'd have to be a little crazy to miss Un Poco Loco.
