ANDY NARELL
Live in South Africa (Heads Up)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
Andy Narrell's Live in South Africa captures two nights of magic at
Johannesburg's Blues Room in April, 2001. Narrell's got quite a following in
South Africa, and his band is as first rate as his earlier effort, Caribbean
Jazz Project. This time out, he's got Zimbabwe's Louis Mhlanga on guitar, Denny
Lalouette from Mauritius playing bass, and South Africans Rob Watson on drums,
Basi Mahlasela on percussion, and Andile Yenapa on keyboards. This two-CD set
woke me up to the potential of the steel pan sound and in Andy's hands (and
hammers), they're turned into a essential part of his world jazz sound. This is
Heads Up's 25th Enhanced CD, and the movie features the band doing "Chakalaka"
live, as well as the full story that brought Andy down to Jo'burg, not to
mention some live rehearsal footage, too. Andy Narrell's music is just the thing
to brighten up a Pacific Northwest winter: whether he's playing in a Trinidadian
engine room or a blues club in Africa, his rhythms are infectious.
