DUKE ROBILLARD
Explorer (Shanachie)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
Duke Robillard's latest Shanachie release is a treat from one bluesman who's all
over the place. He's brought home W C Handy awards for the last two years as
Best Blues Guitarist, and this month, he's nominated for a Maple Blues Award up
in Toronto. In addition to his substantial solo work, he's also played with
Roomful of Blues, the Legendary Blues Band, Ruth Brown, Kim Wilson, and the
Fabulous Thunderbirds, among others. I can't keep track of all the records
he's produced, but I'm glad he's taken time out to put out Explorer. From the
opening flashes of "Male Magnet" to the
country blues of "Lonesome Old Town" and the jump boogie and blues of "Jumpin'
With Duke," Duke's put out another sampler with tunes all over the blues map.
Track List:
Male Magnet * Just Between Me and You * Soulful * Hang On * You Mean Everything
To Me * Sayin' Don't Make It So * Jumpin' With Duke * Misunderstanding Blues *
You Dropped The Thing On Me * Lonesome Old Town * Brand New Fool * Time Is Short
