Leon Russell
HANK WILSON, Vol. II (Navarre)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The honky tonkin alter ego of legendary session man Leon Russell, Hank Wilson is
the perfect front for a country sideline. More than just a passing fancy, or a
one off experiment, Hank Wilson and his records prove to be true blue country
gems deserving praise and ears. Volume II covers traditional fare from Bob
Nolan's "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" to Lefty Frizzell's "If You've Got the Money
Honey:" classic country from days gone by. As Wilson, Russell sings smoothly,
avoiding camping it up with some faux nasal twang, resulting in a respectful ode
to the genre, played flawlessly. Like they used to make 'em.
