MARY J. BLIGE
No More Drama (MCA)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
On No More Drama, Mary J. Blige takes a new slant on her approach to her
hip-hop soul style, and in the process she takes her music to a new and
higher level. Having made changes in her personal and professional life
that provide her with a new sense of command and confidence, she
reflects those changes in music that takes a notably positive stance
toward life and love. No More Drama doesn't mean her performance lacks
the dramatic flair she's so well known for, but it definitely means
she's not willing to play the victim for the entertainment of others
anymore, and in the process proves to be more entertaining than ever.
Her new sense of personal empowerment doesn't mean she won't turn to
others for a hand. She's enlisted the support of some top producers,
from Dr. Dre and Missy Elliot to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis among others,
for help with these tracks, and while fans might debate who does what
better, none of the collaborations overwhelm the growing and glowing
talent of Ms. Blige. Her positive focus on this CD is a positive
development for contemporary R&B overall.
