DON CAMPAU/ERIC WALLACK
Disappearing Act (Lonely Whistle Music)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is one of the strangest CDs to come across my desk for a while, not
because it's really that strange in itself so far as pop music goes, but
because the combination of the vocals, music, and lyrics are just plain weird. Lyrically, this disc touches on classic horror themes and psychedelia and Renaissance-type subject matters alike, all sung in this deep, droning
voice that is not at all lilting or upbeat or as theatrical as the lyrics
themselves. The music ranges from kind of jazzy, slow songs to pop songs
loaded with cheesy, stark-sounding keyboards and fuzzy guitars. It's pretty
crazy, cool stuff, heavily imbued with the feeling that this album heralds
the advent of something really exciting and new.
