FU MANCHU
Start The Machine (DRT)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Is there anything better than a cheesy Fu Manchu stash? It's all about the seventies dude: hot rod muscle cars with racing stripes, afro perms, ascots and bell-bottoms ... wait a minute, that's 2004! Ok the ascots are only a prediction, but my crystal ball has yet to falter. Say what you will, the chuga-chuga boogie guitar heavy sludge metal of Fu-Manchu is one timeless pleasure. Listening in a thick cloud certainly helps, but those law abiding citizens who prefer to do it clean may also extract some happiness in the tunes. They are thick and groovy, much like monster truck wheels. Hell, there's even a bad theremin squeal on the record. Unearth the dinosaur rock for what it truly is: a guilty pleasure you can crank out the back of your souped up pick-up, or better yet from the kitchen window (the neighbours will love you!). How can you resist?
