KIMBERLEY REW
Essex Hideaway (Bongo Beat)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The church organ and angelic choir blessing and epilogue seem rather at odds with this record, but as it turns out Kimberley Rew is quite the odd fella. Essex Hideaway is about as rousing and fun an album since the Soft Boys last got together, which is quite a surprise, considering Robyn Hitchcock was always considered the mad genius behind that rock outfit, and Rew but a hired guitar man. Yet here we are and Rew is whistling along to a kazoo, snarling surrealistic lines, and weaving psychedelic guitar riffs. And it's all fucking groovy! Robyn must be plaid with envy.
