CHEVELLE
Point #1 (Squint)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Hoo boy! Another youthful brother act!

Not that that means anything at all. There's no long blond hair here, not quite as much youth, and a total absence of happy, poppy tales of the angst of teen lust. Chevelle is a solid rock band with audible punk roots, and they're as good at what they're up to as any up and comers I've had a chance to hear lately.

Pete (guitar, vocals), Sam (drums) and Joe (bass) Loeffler have been making the circuit in Chicago for 4 or 5 years. Along the way, they've come up with a set of songs that make Point #1 one of the most attractive debut discs of the last several years. There's nothing particularly novel here. They wear their influences fairly openly, and Steve Albini's production style is familiar to anyone with even a passing familiarity with the music charts of the last few years.

What does set Chevelle apart is talent, tightness and good songs. There are a lot of bands with one of those ingredients. You'll likely never hear of them. There are a few with two. That's most of what you hear. Once in a while, you find the full meal deal. Chevelle is all that.
