FILM SCHOOL
Brilliant Career (Metoo! Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
One thing I can definitely say works in Film School's favor-they definitely
know how to lay an album out. The opening track, "American Turnip," is an
absolutely beautiful instrumental, melancholy and heavy the way My Bloody
Valentine was, with rhythm tracks and vocal samples fading in and out of the
mix at just the right time, making the listener strain to hear what is being
said even though it's obvious the actual words are secondary, the perfect
intro to a wonderful record. Lead singer Krayg Burton works deceptively
simple lyrics and a sweet, happy voice into these moody layers of sound,
provided by Burton as well as Scott Kannenberg of Pavement and Kyle Stantham
of Fuck, among others) creating almost danceable pop songs punctuated by
reflective waves of noise.
