THE ID
Foundation EP (Morphic)

Here's a real curiosity piece. The Id, a four-piece psychedelic band out of Manchester, England, handles their own publicity and does one fantastic job of it, getting themselves on US and UK tours, selling t-shirts, sweat shirts, coffee mugs. Making money is the least of their concerns, however, as you will see at their web site at www.theidfoundation.com , these four are all about activism. They have taken up the causes of Greenpeace, Amnesty International, banning the British "sport" of fox hunting, and they are highly vocal supporters of the anti-racist publication, Searchlight. The web site is info-packed and bursting with photographs and news of the tours and performances, including SxSW in Austin, Texas, which is never anything to be sneezed at.

Here's the curious part...

When you click "Discography," you get a double A-side single and a 4-song EP/CD. That's all they've done. Six songs over a few years. In my opinion -- and realize I'm a sucker for trippin' psychedelia -- the songs range from pretty good (with one of them having a few rough spots) to one magic carpet to the clouds, and I want to hear more. I think they should write several more songs and do a full length. I think if the problem is they don't have a prolific writer they should find one and bring him or her into the band. I think I'm very pleased that the foxes and whales have new friends, but this band will have a greater impact as activists if they get busy and make more of this music. They've got what it takes, now they just have to give us what they've got.
