IRMA THOMAS
If You Want It, Come And Get It (Rounder)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

By the late sixties, Irma Thomas' musical career seemed largely to have run its course, and with a move from New Orleans to California and the rearing of her children dominating her attention, she took a day job and got on with her life. She always kept a foot in the musical door, though, with club gigs and the periodic return to New Orleans for festivals and showcases, so when Rounder signed her for a comeback in 1984, she was ready, and come back she did.

This Rounder Heritage collection sums up the outcome of the comeback, and if you've been wondering where all the good soul music went, well, a lot of it has been right here all along. An old school talent with an ever-fresh outlook, even the newest material here sounds timeless and classic while never, astonishingly, sounding dated.

One of the great soul voices in sixteen standout performances is always cause for celebration. You want a good time? Come and get it.
