CHICAGO BLUES ANGELS
Movin' Out (Blue Bella)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
When I first put in Movin' Out and heard Armando Cortez and his Gibson rip into "Don't Blame Me" I knew that this Plainfield, Illinois band knew the blues cold. They start off with a swing blues groove with the sound of a blues band that's been around a long, long time. Right now, they're regulars at venues like Sam 'n Ella's in Kankakee and Joliet's The Prime Restaurant, but last month they opened for Tommy Castro at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago. As word travels about the Chicago Blues Angels, I'm hoping they'll play more downtown rooms like Buddy's more often. Armando and Dave Gonzalez formed the Chicago Blues Angels just a few short years ago, with Kate Hoddinott on guitar, Nick Moss on bass, and Greg Campbell on drums. Singer Herman Hines joined after sharing a mic on "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" with Dave at a local karaoke night, and when "the Hermanator" sings "Rooster Blues" and "Good Time Charlie," I'm happy that he's an Angel. From the swing-blues of the opening number, to the deep soul of "Say It" with producer Lynnwood Slim's sweet vocals, or the song that would do Howlin' Wolf proud, "Midnight Shift Blues," Movin' Out is a treasure of many different blues styles.
