JIMMY THACKERY & THE DRIVERS
We Got It (Telarc Blues)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

When I saw Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers at Larry's Blues Café in Seattle, it was the fulfillment of a 25-year old dream. I first noticed Jimmy Thackery's singing and playing in college when I went through multiple copies of The Nighthawks' LP, Open All Night, the LP with the classic Edward Hopper painting of a late-night urban archetype, Nighthawks At the Diner. Before the show, Jimmy asked me "why'd it take so long?" to see him live. For the life of me, I couldn't remember, but I will remember Jimmy's expert guitar playing. On We Got It, Jimmy and his Drivers pay tribute to the late Eddie Hinton, one of the forces behind the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section and long-time guitarist for Wilson Pickett. I wish I'd heard Eddie before he passed in 1995, as he clearly was a good soul songwriter. We Got It has soul and R & B stamped all over it, with a serious nod to the Muscle Shoals sound. "Blues Dog Prowl" and "Blues For Sale" are two standout cuts on a disc that shows that Jimmy can indeed learn new tricks. It's a bit of a departure from his earlier releases like Sinner Street or his work with the Nighthawks, but it's sure soulful. And, there's that guitar that's all over the place, rocketing me back to the days of The Nighthawks.
