JW-JONES BAND
Bogart's Bounce (Northern Blues)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

Bogart's Bounce is the JW-Jones Band's follow-up to their Northern Blues debut, Defibrillatin.' While that record was a first-rate blues party CD along the lines of West Coast blues king Kid Ramos or New Orleans' Hoodoo Kings, Bogart's Bounce will get people moving just as good. JW-Jones has been riding high on the Canadian blues circuit since he won the 1999 Blues Guitar Riff Off in his native Ottawa, and in that same year, his harp player "Southside" Steve Marriner also took home the Blues Harp Blow-off. The rhythm section of Nathan "Doghouse" Morris on upright bass and Matt Sobb on drums round out a great unit that's just as comfortable with the West Coast blues of "Sweet Sugar Mama" or rollicking blues of "Blind Date Woman." "Blind Date Woman" is my favorite song on this disc, not only for the work by guest Fabulous Thunderbirds Gene Taylor on piano and Kim Wilson on harp, but the band's high energy jive that more than hold their own with these two very talented bluesmen. It's a fun blues disc, and one that's sure to get people up and moving at any house party.
