KING KONG
The Big Bang (Drag City)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
It's about time you submit to the big gorilla. King Kong returns to rock opera mode (remember Me Hungry ?, that was good), with a spacey funk trip that's all fun and no baggage. Ethan Buckler moves further away from guitar and closer to the gizmo buttons on his synth, but the groove is still well and truly in the heart. About the most soothing record from this camp, The Big Bang carefully sets up a listening tempo atmosphere as Buckler deadpans his extraterrestrial tale of monkey mayhem, sex and the beginning of life. Planet of the apes - the musical: a 2002 space odyssey. You bet.
