VARIOUS ARTISTS
Pickin' On Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Vol.2 (CMH Records)

The listing for this review is somewhat deceptive. Although the title indicates a CSN&Y collection, compositions by Mr. Young are noticeably absent, and though the lineup changes a bit from track to track and there is no artist listing on the cover, it's almost silly not to call this a David West album. West is the one player (and on occasion the only player) appearing on every track, turning in another of his amazing one-man string band performances that have been the highlight of many releases in the successful "Pickin' On" series for CMH. He's also the composer of the only track not written by Crosby, Stills or Nash, an original entitled "Maya" that might be an appropriate choice for the next CSN project if a set of harmony friendly lyrics were developed.

Though it's a tribute album, West takes liberties with the arrangements, providing some fresh looks at some familiar songs. One of the best of the series so far.
