SPOOKIE DALY PRIDE
Marshmallow Pie (self-released)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Marshmallow Pie is what you get when four musicians scramble up a mix of funk, rock, reggae and dixieland in the attempt to find out just how much fun you can have making music. A lot of fun, it turns out, and you can have a lot of fun listening to them.

With elements including lead kazoo and scat vocals stirred into the mix, there's an appealing determination not to take things too seriously, but make no mistake - these are seriously talented musicians. Big fun is hard work. Music played poorly is no fun at all, good intentions notwithstanding, and Spooky Daly Pride do everything they do well. It's eclectic enough to fall well beyond the mainstream, but the band has set out to build its own mainstream through an arduous show schedule and promotion of their self-released debut. If they have half as much fun onstage as they convey on CD, they're likely to succeed.

Meanwhile, I'll be playing the hell out of this one all summer.
