THE FORTY-FIVES
Fight Dirty (Yep Roc)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
Peoples, this is some rocking stuff! The Forty-Fives mine a garage rock territory similar to many other bands, but add a lot more soul to the proceedings. In a lot of ways, they remind me of the Swinging' Neckbreakers with more keyboards, mainly 'cause of the similarity in vocal styles. You can literally feel the sweat and soul dripping from this baby. The songs are so catchy and addictive it's hard not to start jumping around dancing when listening to it, so why bother trying to stop oneself? I bet these cats are really good live. I can't wait to see them when they open up for the Dictators here. One funny thing is that in their press kit, some reviewer goes on about the great mellotron organ sound they use. I'm not sure where he got that from, especially considering the mellotron wasn't really an organ per se anyways, and judging from the pictures the keyboardist plays a Roland synth, mostly on the Farfisa or Hammond organ settings, although on "Great Escape" he uses a weirder and spacier synth sound to really good effect.
