JOAN ARMATRADING
Love And Affection: Joan Armatrading Classics
(1975-1983) (A&M)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

It's hard to wish for more in a greatest hits package than this Joan Armatrading compilation of 43 songs, compiled from 11 albums, released during the 1975 through 1983 period. All of her major hits are included, plus other equally noteworthy numbers. Just released as a two cd set, the songs are arranged in chronological order, making it easy to hear Armatrading's progress and maturity as she developed her song writing and performing craft.

Armatrading's eclectic style combines bits of pop, reggae, jazz, and folk into a dynamic, and extremely listenable, style, that emphasizes thoughtfully mature lyrics concerning relationships and love with a keen sense of melody. At times, it's almost as if Armatrading is singing directly and solely to the listener, establishing a sense of intimacy not often heard today. Songs such as "Down To Zero," "Love And Affection," "Water With The Wine," "Show Some Emotion," and "All The Way From America," rank among the finest tunes written during the 1975 through 1983 period and get right to the heart of the human condition.

This is the one Armatrading disc to own, even for die-hard fans. It's wonderful to have all these great songs collected in a single place. As with any compilation featuring this many tunes, fans can quibble with some of the selections. For instance, Armatrading's 1980 release "Me Myself" highlights eight numbers, yet several of her other records weigh in with only two. However, looking at the big picture, this is a first class disc that should delight both old and new fans of Armatrading. Kudos to A&M for getting it right.
