The War On Errorism (Fat Wreck Chords)
Reviewed by Rusty Pipes
NOFx has been around for a long time; I knew them primarily for punk facelifts on old classic rock tunes, something they were very good at. They've always seemed like a fun band but I never went out of my way to check out an entire album of theirs. Until now.
When I noticed the picture of Dubya in clown-drag on cover of The War On Errorism, I knew I had to check it out. After all, I could use some politically driven power chords to help dispel my Patriot Act angst in these dark times.
I wasn't disappointed. Songs like "The Idiots Are Taking Over" and "Franco Un-American" became instant classics with me, and yes, there are some other songs like "She's Nubs" that are just pure punk fun. But there's more! This is an enhanced CD so there are several extras that will play on your computer such as a great animated video for "Franco Un-American," and live footage of "Idiot Son Of An Asshole" which isn't on the audio portion of the album, but it's no less important than the other songs. Beyond the music and much more powerful in a different way is the trailer for Joan Sekler and Richard Perez's documentary on the 2000 election, Unprecedented. If that doesn't make you mad and ready to oust Resident Bush and all his cronies, then obviously the rest of The War On Errorism will be lost on you too.
This is the most politically aware punk since the Dead Kennedys. Bless Fat Mike, Erik "Smelly" Sandin, Eric Melvin and El Hefe for using the power of music to radicalize the masses to change the world. We need it.
By the way, John Ashcroft will probably arrest you for buying it if you wait for Patriot II to be enacted, so get it while you can.
