ROB THE VIKING
Beats to Pillage and Conquer By, Version 1.0
(Battle Axe)

Reviewed by Jason Thornberry

The Viking spent so much time making everyone else sound great that he never got a chance for a moment of his own until now. His work as part of Canada's Battle Axe crew put him in charge of the production of many of the discs on their roster, so label-head Madchild's Swollen Members prudently drafted the man in 2002 for their subsequent albums, but he needed to take a step back for a moment. Beats to Pillage and Conquer By percolates his individual style -- jazzy flutes, strings, and crackling pianos over crisp beats -- and it pays to simply lie down and let the feelings of the songs sink in. Or in Viking's words, "Let My Record Rotate".
