BERT VAN DEN BRINK TRIO W/RICK MARGITZA
Conversations (Challenge)

I haven't heard every rhythm section in Holland, so I can't say for sure
that the Bert van den Brink Trio (van den Brink, piano; Hein Van de
Geyn, bass; Hans van Oesterhout, drums) is the absolute best, but if
they aren't, I'd sure like to hear who is. In fact, if they are, number
two could likely still provide a lot of pleasure.
The last recording I heard by the Trio found them behind Lee Konitz for
an outside set. This time, they're joined by the tenor saxophone of
Rick Margitza for a set of standards that stays mainly inside. There
are moments, in fact, when this disc sounds as though even the "smooth
jazz" fans could find something to like in the more melodic moments.
Those "smoothies" might be put off, though, by the impressive
improvisational skills of van den Brink and Margitza, whose creativity
could inspire actual thought. That, of course, is the antithesis of the
whole "smooth jazz" concept.
Altogether, this is an enjoyable set for the straight-ahead jazz fan,
with subdued tempos predominating but with first rate playing throughout.
