GEORGE JONES
Best Of/20th Century Masters (Mercury)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

This is one of the best entries in the 20th Century Masters/Millennium Collection series to date. And at least eighty percent of the reason is George Jones' can't-miss catalog of classic country songs. You could throw darts at his song list and come up with a twelve pack guaranteed to please. For this particular go 'round, the darts landed on sweet bits of country lore like "Just One More," "White Lightning," "Family Bible" and "Why Baby Why." As with most of the CDs in this series, it's short and to the point (a dozen tunes in just about half an hour), but because Jones' songs are such complete little stories, it feels like a nice long visit with one of country music's greatest performers. The sound is clear as a bell, and at about 12 bucks, it's not a bad deal at all.

Track List:
