THE ALICE PROJECT
Traveling With Lady Berlin (Clown Milk Records)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Alice Leon writes fresh, literate pop that has more in common with antecedents like Carly Simon and Carole King than her contemporaries in the alt.grrl music scene. That's not to say that she hasn't got an edge of her own, but it's more likely to be expressed with a sigh than a growl, and her sound has an air of cabaret sophistication that separates her from the pack.

It's definitely worth taking a look at her website (www.thealiceproject.com) to get a look at her lyrics. It's not that she doesn't sing them clearly, but they are literate and complex enough to be better appreciated when they are read as well as heard. If you don't, though, you're still going to be treated to a fine sonic experience. This is smart music, and smart people (by which I mean you, of course!) will be well advised to check it out soon.
