DAVID CANDY
Play Power (Jetset)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
What decade is this? This whimsical record opens with a bongos and cheesy organ
interlude, then David himself offers a reassuring introductory speech ("Don't
worry, I'll look after you"), inviting you to his world while sixties era
Europop bounces away in the background. This is where the psychedelic trip
begins. Play Power is like an Austen Powers movie, except it all sounds on the
up and up. Tongues may be firmly planted deep in cheek, but there is obviously a
respect for the genre here as Candy rolls from track to track never stepping out
of character, or outwardly mocking himself. David Candy is actually Ian
Svenonius from rockin' outfit The Make-Up and what he's up to here is anyone's
guess. It sure sounds nice and summery though.
