Smokey Robinson says this is the greatest album of all time. Who am I to disagree? If, by some bizarre quirk of chance, you've managed to avoid hearing Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterpiece, well, you'll never have a better reason to find out what you're missing.
Motown's Deluxe Edition has a beautifully mastered version of the original release, but there's so much more than that in this double DC release. An alternate mix of the entire album is included, along with a live version of the whole album, a live medley of some of Gayes greatest 60s hits, the original singles culled from the album, the rhythm track to the title cut and more. Gaye's incredible chops as a songwriter, recording artist, performing artist, producer and general all round musical phenomenon are on full display from start to finish. Toss in a 26 page booklet with lyrics, session information, historical and biographical background and photos and you have what is in simple terms *the* must buy soul music release of the year.
