THE SIN-TONES
The Sin-Tones (Fading Ways Music)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Call me a sucker but I love primal guitar rock. And when the guitar dabbles in
surf, spy and garage I'm ordering another round. The Sin-Tones may be the
closest thing to the much lamented if not totally ignored Dik Van Dykes, we've
had up here in the Arctic. And dang it, it's been too long. Not only does this
giddy-up trio churn out rather impressive originals ("Jesus Had a Gibson"), but
they also have impeccable taste when butchering other's material. A revved up
instrumental version of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" will surely wake
Gordie Lightfoot from the dead. A swank take on the "Mary Tyler Moore" theme
brings it all home, and I must confess to being quite partial to the two-fer
"Hava Tequila". My only quibble is that there ain't enough vocals. Mebbe next
time.
