SNOOKY PRYOR & MEL BROWN
Double Shot (Electro-Fi)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
By the time this review hits the screens of Cosmik Debris, you'll know if Snooky
Pryor and Mel Brown took home the Handy hardware for Double Shot at this year's
W.C. Handy Awards. I sure hope it did, but just in case Double Shot didn't, let
me tell you why this reunion of two great American blues greats is one of my
favorites. This is first time they've recorded together as a duo, and I hope
that the folks at Toronto's Electro-Fi label bring them back together for
another set. On Double Shot, songs like "Dirty Rat," "Snooky and Mel Boogie" or
"Let Your Hair Down, Woman" are all instant electric blues classics. These two
elder statesmen of the blues rock like kids, even though their blues careers
have spanned nearly four decades. Snooky and Mel headlined at Antone's Club in
Austin, Texas during the 1980s, and Double Shot gives us a taste of that magic.
As Snooky says, "I'll rock all night if you want to." On Double Shot, Snooky's
harp and Mel's guitar rock the house.
