MALKUM & CHRIS
Yes, I Want To Go (Buckatoon)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Although they've strayed widely and played in a variety of styles and settings over the years, Malkum Gibson and Chris Kleeman are a musical partnership with roots that go back over 30 years (their first album was produced by BB King in 1970). With an obvious and acknowledged debt to the immortal Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, they are among the finest modern practitioners of traditional country blues, and there are 13 exceptional examples on their second Buckatoon release, Yes, I Want To Go. Mixing their original tunes with tracks from the catalogs of Sonny & Brownie, Fred McDowell, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James and others, they play in a straightforward vein, just Malkum's harp, Chris' guitar and each of their expressive voices. This album exudes the kind of tight musicality and joyful expression that only develops over the course of a long and close musical partnership. Favorites of clubs and festivals around the world, they'll be favorites of yours after the first spin of this disc.
