GUITAR WOLF
UFO Romantics (Ki/oon Records)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
The first new Guitar Wolf CD in some years is fantastic. It shreds,
with absolutely no instrumentals this time, and these guys started off
as an instro band! It's all "sung" in crazed phonetic English, or a
weird mix of English and Japanese by either Seiji or Billy. Okay, so
maybe they take liberties here by completely rewriting "Little Latin
Lupe Lu" as "Jet Beer," but musically this may be their best yet.
While better produced than any previous efforts, it's still
supercharged rock and roll with plenty of fuzz and distorted guitar
solos, screaming, and a completely insane sound for the most part.
It's like equal parts '50s rockabilly, '60s garage rock, and '77 punk,
all wrapped up in a ready-to-explode ball of wax, or in this case,
ball of, err, digital reproduction!
