THE JAYHAWKS
Blue Earth (Ryko/Restless)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
A re-release of the last independent gasp of alt-country darlings the Jayhawks, before major label promotion and subsequent glory, is already igniting heated debates over which of the band's slabs is the grandest. Why quibble, just enjoy I say. Chief writer Mark Olson is still in the band, and there's few pleasures in life like his sweet harmonies with Gary Louris - the missing ingredient in phase two of said band. Never mind the Eagles, this is the real link between Gram Parson's angelic country and the revitalized No Depression movement of the nineties.
