LAURA LOVE
Welcome To Pagan Place (Koch)

Hmmmm, I wonder why did I get sent this? This is about as far removed from my sphere of musical interest as you can get, it being some sort of Modern folk/world music. In the accompanying booklet, she writes a two-page essay on the state of the world, in which she makes some valid, if only somewhat over simplified statements about the state of America. While I appreciate her anti-war/anti-Bush opinions, I can't get in to her music. The lyrics alone to most of the songs make me cringe, especially stuff like "Little Black Beatle" with lines like "My oh my/you've got a big fat hill to climb before you get to your potato/Maybe you should take a little nap before that wind turns into a tornado/Heeee!" Uh, okay. A couple of songs tackle more complex social/political issues, and while I can appreciate her sentiments, the execution is just too wimpy and Hippie-dippy for my taste. Also, I'd like to point out that the world's problems ain't gonna be solved by everyone "returning to the Earth" and smiting technology, which, someone should remind Laura Love, her CD and website are the result of.
