MERCURY BOY
Get It Goin' (Special Run Limited Edition) (Jafzi Records)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
This EP contains four high-energy Mercury Boy songs that take me right back to late 70s and early 80s punk. Think of rooms like Seattle's Gorilla Room, CBGB's in New York, or Chicago's Circuits room. The band's got a science fiction thing going on, and make-up courtesy of the Gary Numan school of make-up and styling, and a clean, crisp sound that harkens back to the best of bands like The Clash, Billy Idol, or ABC. According to Mercury Boy's website, "MERCURY BOY is my endeavor to put the energy back into music where it has been absent. The overindulgence of emo, the listlessness of shoegazing, the depression of grunge all bore me. Therefore I perform to provoke people to expose their inner thoughts and desires, and to share my hyperactivity with them." Mercury Boy is more than a trip down memory lane: it's punk updated, with a fresh, kinetic sound.
