THE MOODY BLUES
A Night at Red Rocks with the
Colorado Symphony Orchestra (Deluxe Edition)
(Polydor/Universal)

Live At Red Rocks captures the Moody Blues with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Red Rocks Amphitheater in 1992, the first time the band performed with an orchestra before a live audience. Since then, the Moody Blues have been performing live with orchestras at open-air venues throughout the US. I saw them with the Spokane Symphony at the Gorge in George, Washington, a few years after their Red Rocks debut. This Deluxe Edition captures all the nuances of the Moody Blues Live.

A Night At Red Rocks commemorates the 25th anniversary of Days of Future Passed, a breakthrough concept album that featured the London Festival Orchestra. "Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)" are here from that landmark LP, as well as many songs that helped the Moody Blues merge rock and roll with an orchestral foundation. "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock Roll Band)" and "Ride My See-Saw" are two of my favorites on this disc, and like Ray Thomas, Justin Hayward, John Lodge, and Graeme Edge, they've held up quite nicely since the first time I heard them more than 25 years ago. A Night at Red Rocks is a celebration of the Moody Blues and one that belongs on the shelf of any Moody Blues fan.
