Got Dance? (Surge)
Reviewed by Sparky Lou
Hi, kids! Long time, no judge. That's because your Uncle Sparky's been doing time in rehab, and I don't mean drug rehab. I was at a club in Paris, dancing my ass off, and I decided it was time to try a new move. I suppose I should have worked up to it instead of just jumping right in, since it is considered a show stopper both on the dance floor and the world class gymnastics circuit, but what's done is done. Sign my cast?
I've been flown in by the Cosmik Mafia to give my yay or nay on this 2 disc collection of dance music. Don't get excited if you think of Earth, Wind & Fire or, God help you, KC & The Sunshine Band when you read the words "Dance Music," though. Electronic dance music is the soup of the day, and its cooked up by some of the best chefs in the business. It sounds marvelously lush, even in my walkman, and it lasts a long, long time. Something I always look for, if you know what I mean. The trend now is for big sampled acoustic beats, but there's still a following for these computerized pulsations and vocoder-enhanced alliterations, and probably always will be as long as they can make them sound so flippin' huge! It's always going to have a place with me, at any rate.
If there's a problem with Got Dance, it's just that a lot of the songs are getting tired from overuse. We've heard them in every club and on the air. The best sounding (I didn't say all-around best run) Netcasters play some of these to death. There are some wicked Moby cuts that would be more than worthy of inclusion, but instead Got Dance becomes something like the fifteen millionth CD to have "We Are All Made of Stars" on it. And I am a junkie for Four Strings' "Take Me Away (Into the Night)," but I've got it now, thanks! Several times! Still, there's more than a few here I just hear a lot but don't have, so I'm happy to own it. For someone who doesn't have a big collection of electronic dance music, it's a no brainer. Get it and practice for the club because the beats are slammin'. Just promise your Uncle Sparky you won't try any move that involves more than two aerial spins. And nothing with the words "air" and "twist" in the same move. I know of what I speak, kids. Now c'mon, sign the cast.
