ANTLER
Antler (Tortuga Recordings)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

Antler, the self-titled debut from this Boston-based southern rock band, is a well crafted and well played album that proves you don't have to be from the deep South to feel this style music in your soul. With two guitarists and an organist, the band evokes memories of early Allman Brothers. Fans of classic or country rock will find much to enjoy here.

The CD opens with "Tombstones and Cigarettes," a lament to lost love and the pain that results. The vocals and guitar solos are spare, concise and taut; perfect for communicating the deeply emotional message. Next up is "1975," with a guitar riff that would have made Lynyrd Skynyrd proud. The rest of the album sustains the high quality level.

The band, all in their 30s, consists of Tim Catz (guitar), Craig Riggs (vocals), Pete Valle (guitar), Brian Strawn (drums), Dave Unger (keyboards) and Quinn (bass). Addressing mature themes mixed with gripping music, Antler have produced an album that improves with each successive listen. Look for them in the future. Familiarity should breed success.
